The first person I photographed for Athens Potluck was Laura Carter from Elf Power. Laura grew up in Athens, founded the Orange Twin Collective, and I had photographed her band, Elf Power, several times. I was scheduled to photograph Elf Power again the same day that Beth and I hit on the idea for Athens Potluck, and Laura just seemed like the perfect person to photograph first. I drove out to Orange Twin and spent the afternoon photographing Laura around her house and in the gardens around her home. I think it was when she showed me Jeff Mangum’s suitcase from the first Neutral Milk Hotel / Elf Power tour that I first realized what the Athens Potluck project would be. Seeing musician Will Hart’s paintings decorating the walls of Laura’s living room, and the horn I’d seen her play on stage so many times, gave me the idea of photographing Athens musicians in their homes rather than live onstage.
Elf Power has always been one of my favorite Athens bands. I've know these guys since I moved here in 1994. I was honored to collaborate with them on the music video for Darkest Wave. I think we won a Flagpole award for this one. It's still one of my favorite music videos I've had the chance to work on.
